Discussion:
[SLE] installing freecell.exe and cards.dll under wine

Hi guys,

I mean this isn't really important, but I'd like to run freecell.exe
from WinME under wine. Even under SuSE 9.1 I just could copy the
cards.dll into the same directory as freecell.exe, not so under SuSE 9.2
anymore (apparently) or does it work being copied into /usr/lib/wine or
/usr/lib/win32 and I even tried to setup an entry in ~/.wine/config.

So, my question: what can I do to get it running again?

Would be nice to get an answer!

Best regards
Martin

I cannot answer your question, but what's wrong with the solitaire
programs included with SuSE? Both Patience and AiseRiot include
Freecell.

Run kpat, they have freecell, solitaire, spider and many other card games
under linux. It is actually better than the versions in windows.

I can't help with your problem but did you know that suse 9.1 has
freecell in its card games? It works even better than the win version.
Also spider which is better. Solitair as well only its called
klondike. Just FYI.
Robert Rawlinson
Yeah, even though I forgott about it, I knew it!

But, there is a capabillity of the windows freecell, which I would like
to use and which prevented me from using the linux version so far, which
is the counting of the total wins/losses and the streaks and so on! ;.-)
That's actually why I still like the win version of freecell. But maybe
I just should program that into the linux version, shouldn't I?

Well, thanks a lot anyways for your efforts and oppinions :-D

KPatience keeps track of that data under Game->Statistics, it has Freecell, as
well as many other solitaire games.

If you play Klondike in Patience (I always play the draw-3 variant) you
should know that the "Could Not Win!" alert, which states "You could
not win this game, but there is always a second try. Start a new game?"
is not accurate. You can sometimes win these games, so just ignore it
and go on playing until you see that the game stops progressing.

Thanks Corvus, this isn't too bad to start with, but still there is an
annoying fact. I can start WinFreeCell without starting a game and just
look into the statistics f.e. but I can't do that with kpatience or can
I? I mean I start kpatience and I HAVE to play the game. If I don't even
start one I still loose one. That resulted in 2 games a actually made
(just to test it) and 6 I haven't which again resulted in 8 games
counted. That is not what I expect. Sorry.

Yours
Martin

Better to install Pysol, or any of the other games the others have
suggested, but Pysol has so many versions of solitaire/freecell you'll never
want to see the M$ freecell again.

I believe it *is* important. As you see, any subject
like this attracts someone's or many's attention.
Converting EXT3 to DVD (Mpeg2) via YOU or so(!) aren't
the only important things ;-)

Try to run WinXP version of freecell. I could not run
the Win98 version (i.e. closer to ME) with wine, but,
XP version runs well.
You do not have to have Windows XP installed (or any
other Windows); Just prepare the file "freecell.exe"
and copy it to your linux home directory. Double click
on it an choose wine to run it! (I guess you know how
to obtain freecell.exe without installing windows.)

If your wine configuration has been destroyed or
changed, you can do these:

1- Remove ".wine" directory from your home folder (as
you know, it is hidden by default).

2- Run "winecfg" at the command prompt. It has a
graphical configuration at the final step. After
setting your parameters, press OK.

I recommend download and compile the last version of
wine. Wine is being improved very fast and I see
dramatic changes from version to version. If I don't
mistake, it has a new version per month.

And finally, I encourage you to learn and play linux
games as other members said.

I think it is good to participate with developers to
fixing bugs and adding wishes or patches for linux
games. Inside the handbook of any game there is a list
of contact addresses as well as developers' emails.
Start doing this today and enjoy tomorrow!
