[SLE] No sound in my headphones :-(

Hi, I'm using SUSE 8.2 w/ Alsa on a dell inspiron 8500.

After switching from RH to SuSE I now got the strange problem that while
my loudspeakers are working ok, I cannot get the PC to switch to using
the headphones. If I plug the headphones in, no sound comes out of any
speaker.

I've tried fiddeling with alsamixer, but with no changes happening. Has
anyone encountered this problem before and know how to solve it?

I had a similar problem - no sound from the speaker, but the headphones
worked, and no amount of messing with the mixer would make it work.
alsaconf, which has always worked for me in the past, failed to make any
difference.

In the end I removed all the alsa related material from modules.conf and
replaced it with a single line ..

alias sound-slot-0 trident

.. now the speaker is working properly and mutes when I plug in the
headphones. The mixer controls are a little odd, but it is possbile to
set the required volume with a little experimentation ;-)

Oh, this was with a Sony Vaio, BTW

Just thought I'd say how I solved this one:

Opened meny->multimedia->sound->gamix
Pressed the dot below "headphones"
And suddenly it worked!
Not obvious, but simple :-)

Thanks for that info. I had given up on making my microphone work. I
followed your lead and opened gamix and unselected "As" on the
microphone and now it works.

Happily recording voice,
