I'm trying to restore an old machine and would like to put an early SuSE on
it. Is there a source to download the early packages. I have a copy of 4.2
on a Walnut Creek CD and am looking for something older.

Interestingly, SuSE is not interested in preserving its own history. But I
believe the gwdg ftp server keeps some.

You'll be hard pressed to find much. ISTR 4.1 was the first S.u.S.E
version. I think, there's some guys on the german list (opensuse-de)
that still have images. You can write there in english (you should
mention the reason though), or I could ask for you there.

Well, I think they're interested. Just not _that_ much. And they know,
there's people out there, that are and keep copies ;)

-dnh, having 5.3 and newer CDs/DVDs (should test & copy the old ones,
some of these days ;) ... and still running a 6.2 (of sorts ;)

4.2 what the first offical release.

In 1996, the first "real" distribution provided by the company was
published under the name S.u.S.E Linux 4.2. The version number chosen
has caused much discussion: it should have been just a version 1.1,
but above all it was the beginning of a new distribution. As version
1.1 was finally rejected, the number 4.2 was rather considered, and is
an intentional reference to the reply of the "Big Question about Life,
the Universe and the Rest" of the H2G2 science fiction novels series
of the English writer Douglas Adams: The Hitchhiker's Guide to the
Galaxy. The number of the first version of YaST, 0.42, was also drawn
from the same source.

Well that means I have been with SuSE from the beginning.
I have 4.2 from Wallnut Creek and the boxsets for 6.0, 6.2, 6.3, 7.0, 7.1,
7.3, 8.1, 9.3. My local retailer stoipped carrying Suse after 9.3 so I've
been downloading them since then.
